I- God is an Unknowable being. II- God’s acts are also unknowable. III- Application to the origins controversy. IV- Why do I put so much effort into the controversy about origins? I - The Bible repeatedly and clearly states that God cannot be known except if He reveals himself. 1Matt 11:27 … no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. This should not come as a surprise. After all God is a being who is not evident to any of our physical senses. We cannot see Him, touch him, hear him. We are completely at His mercy. If He does not reveal Himself, we can never know who He is. John 1:18 - No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. Whatever we do know of Him, has been revealed through the incarnation of Jesus Christ. If Jesus Christ had not taken on human form and taught among us, we would still be in the dark about the true God. I Cor. 1:21 - the world through its wisdom did not come to know God. … knowing God and His truth is a miracle of grace, not a triumph of human discovery, says the theologian Alan Richardson.2 Origen, one of the great church fathers says this: Christians maintain that human nature is in no way able to seek after God, or to attain a clear knowledge of Him. 3How horrible it would be if Jesus Christ had not come to earth. How thankful we must be for His immeasurable love. How thankful we must be that we have the Bible as our source for truth. II- It follows logically then that the acts of God cannot be known except God reveals them. How God Did or Does anything cannot be known without revelation from God himself.1 Ecc. 11:5 - Just as you do not know the path of the wind or how bones are formed in the womb of a pregnant woman, so you do not know the activity of God who makes all things. To try and discover How God created is a wasted effort, misleading, and erroneous. If God has not told us, we cannot find out no matter how long or how hard we try. In addition, any attempt to ascribe any of our thoughts and ideas to God are at best futile and at worst blasphemous. Ecc. 3:11 - no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end. We must be content with what is given in the Bible. To pretend that we can discover How God did anything is arrogant, contrary to Biblical revelation and displays a lack of understanding how the Bible is to be interpreted. Now you might object, "Look, we live in the 21st century, the writers of the Bible were old foggies. What did they know? They didn’t have computers, they didn’t have the Internet, they didn’t even have good cell phones." Well, then let me quote you some words from modern scientists: Morris Kline: the real essence of material substance is forever unknowable.4 Benacerraf: The idea that science is a search for truth is completely without basis.5 Karl Popper: Science is not a system of certain, or well established statements. Our science is not knowledge- we do not know, we can only guess.6 Einstein: We know nothing at all. All our knowledge is but the knowledge of schoolchildren. The real nature of things we shall never know, never.7 None of these men, as far as I know is a Christian, but do you know why I read them, respect them and treasure them? Because they are honest enough to admit that they do not Know. They echo, again and again, the words of 2Tim 3:7- Men are always learning but are NEVER able to come to a knowledge of the truth. To even entertain the thought that we can know How God created is utter foolishness. The Bible is clear, the wisdom of man is foolishness before God. The history of ideas is clear, man cannot discover truth no matter how hard he tries. WE MUST TURN TO GOD FOR TRUE KNOWLEDGE AND NO ONE ELSE. And this knowledge is found nowhere else than the Bible. To summarize then: Since God is unknowable except He reveals Himself. And since God’s acts are unknowable except He reveals them. And since the Bible is our sole source of true Knowledge about God, we can come to the following conclusion: If what you say about God is not in the Bible, you are not talking about the Only True God. How does this principle apply to the problem of origins? III- There are at least Three reasons why evolution is Not the answer to the question of origins. Reason # 1- Evolution is Not science because no one can observe it taking place. No one can see one kind of animal turning into another kind. The first and most important requirement of any Science is OBSERVATION. Karl Popper, the most respected philosopher of science of the 20 th century said this: I have come to the conclusion that Darwinism is not a testable scientific theory.8 Why is it untestable? Because it is unobservable. We cannot experiment on a process that we cannot observe. And Evolution cannot be observed. If we cannot observe evolution, how can we be sure it is happening? If you ask an evolutionist, please show me one kind of animal changing into another kind, he will tell you that it is not possible it because it takes millions of years. Where does that leave us? The only person who was there before the creation is God. And the Bible has nothing in it about evolution. And what it does have is in direct contradiction to evolution. We can conclude that evolution is not now taking place. Reason #2- Evolution is unscientific- Evolution is Contrary to the most well established law of Science, the law of Entropy. The law of decay. Everything, if left to itself, does not improve with time, or even remain the same quality, but rots, decays, rusts, corrodes. Why is this law so reliable? Because the Bible tells us that it is the way nature behaves. Isa 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment…The earth is wearing out, it is not improving with time. Evolution says everything becomes better with time, The Bible and Science say everything wears out and decays with time. We can thus conclude that Evolution Cannot take place. Reason #3- Evolution cannot account for Adam. Adam, the first human created by God, was sinless, he was not subject to physical death, and he had neither father nor mother. He was formed from the dust of the ground. It is impossible to fit such a person in any Evolutionary scenario. In evolution, there was never a time when Death did not reign on earth. That is in direct contradiction to the Bible, which says there was no physical death before Adam’s sin. Evolution teaches that “By Death came man.” In complete contradiction to 1Cor 15: By Man came death. IV- Finally Part Four of my message: I want you to understand why I am so driven to declare Jesus Christ as Creator. I have made it clear in the past that just because we are Christians does not make us immune from sin. You can be a Christian and be a thief. You can be a Christian and treat others most cruelly. You can be a Christian and commit murder. And you can be a Christian who believes in evolution. Personally, I believe the last group has done more damage recently to the Church and to the cause of Christ than all the other sinners combined. Mt 10:28 says- … do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Why is the teaching of evolution so dangerous? Here are some informative quotes: Colin Brown- by far the most potent single factor to undermine belief in the existence of God in modern times is the evolution theory of Charles Darwin. 9 Professor Will Provine, a self-described atheist: Belief in modern evolution makes atheists of people. 10 Richard Dawkins is the preeminent evolutionist of our time. He says: I can’t imagine being an atheist before 1859. Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist. 11Dawkins has appeared on many television and radio talk shows and wants to stop the teaching of religion to children, even in churches. He calls Christianity a dangerous Virus, and teaching it to children he calls Child-Abuse. He wants the government to remove children from those parents who continue to teach Christianity to their children. The most evil philosophies that have come about in the last 150 years, Racism, Nazism, Communism, are all firmly based on the dogma of Evolution. In fact the subtitle to Darwin’s book, The Origin of the Species is this: The Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life. Yes, Darwin believed he belonged to a favored race. He came from the highest classes of British society. Charles Darwin was an extreme Racist. I will paraphrase a paragraph from one of his books. “At some not very distant future, the civilized races of man will almost certainly EXTERMINATE and replace, the savage races throughout the world. The separation between the Caucasian races and the gorilla will be wider, because the Negros and Australian aborigines will no longer exist.”12 This is the logical result of the evil of evolution. Does this have anything in common with the words of praise for Christ in Rev 5:9? And they sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe- and language- and people- and nation. The Spirit and the words of Evolution are in complete contradiction to the Spirit and words of the Bible. Why am I so driven to declare Jesus Christ as Creator? It is because I do not want anyone but the Lord Jesus Christ to receive the glory for all of creation. Evolution, disguised as Science, is an attempt to give the credit to the material objects themselves. Evolution is the worship of the creature and not the Creator. Idolatry has been common throughout history. Evolution is the modern version of the old idolatry. Romans 1:25 still applies in out time- … they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator. Every Christian should echo these words from Revelation 4:11 without hesitation: You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: because you have created all things, and for your pleasure they exist and were created.
